| Abstract: | This paper reviews the literature to identify educational programs that have been shown to be effective for Hispanic students in the elementary and middle grades, that are replicable across a broad range of schools, and that have been successfully evaluated or frequently applied to schools serving many Hispanic students. Specific strategies that schools could select to improve achievement outcomes for Hispanic students are highlighted. Categories of programs examined include schoolwide reform programs, including accelerated schools and school development programs; classroom instructional programs, including cooperative learning methods, bilingual programs, and cognitively guided instruction; curriculum specific programs, including those for early childhood such as Head Start; tutoring programs; and Title VII Academic Excellence Award winning programs. A table summarizing the degree to which each program met the various inclusion criteria is included, and the factors which contributed to program effectiveness are described. An appendix contains contact information for each program reviewed. |
