Abstract:

This paper reviews the research on programs designed to affect dropout rates and related outcomes for Hispanic middle and high school students. Six programs met the evaluation criteria for significantly impacting the rate of dropouts, college attendance, school performance, or related outcomes, replicability, and evaluation or application with Hispanic students. The criteria for review are described. The programs examined include dropout prevention programs (The Coca Cola Valued Youth Program and ALAS) and college attendance programs (Upward Bound, SCORE, Advancement Via Individual Determination, and Graduation Really Achieves Dreams). CPEC program evaluations of nine college attendance and dropout programs in California are considered. A table summarizes the degree to which each program met the various inclusion criteria. An appendix contains contacts for information on the programs reviewed. (jpb)
