Abstract:

The article reviews what is known about dropout rates and refutes the argument that bilingual education programs are the reason for the high dropout rate among Hispanic students. The fact that most Spanish-speaking students are not in bilingual education programs is asserted. Addressed is evidence that students with poorer skills in English have a higher dropout rate than those who are more successful. Also discussed are the relationship between "background factors" such as socioeconomic class, time spent in the U.S., and family factors (social capital) on dropout percentages.
