| Abstract: | This paper discusses the switch from instruction in English to instruction in Cantonese in secondary schools in Hong Kong, briefly describing results from four studies on student progress. In spite of initial opposition from parents, students, teachers, and administrators, findings from the studies appear to show that mother-tongue teaching has provided a positive, non-threatening learning environment for students, and the feeling that they are making progress in English. Students in these programs appear to be more active, learn more subject matter, enjoy school more, and improve in English. (Contains 11 references.) (EV) |
