Abstract:

As a partial response to the high dropout rate for Hispanic students in U.S. schools, the Hispanic Dropout Project (HDP) held public hearings and took public testimony from locations where schools enrolled many Hispanic students. To illustrate the research and highlight exemplary schools and programs, the HDP also commissioned a series of nontechnical case studies that illustrate the issues. In this report, the first chapter discusses the Hispanic dropout problem and makes some recommendations for its solution. Chapter 2 discusses the programs of the Lennox Middle School, Lennox, California. Chapter 3 focuses on the secondary level strategies for Hispanic youth in the Calexico School District, California. Chapter 4 considers three elementary school programs that work to ensure academic success for Hispanic students, and chapter 5 explores two secondary level programs that prepare Hispanic students for solid futures. Chapter 6 discusses transforming education for Hispanic youth. (Contains 13 references and a bibliography of 131 items.) (SLD)
