| Abstract: | This paper discusses issues in assessment and development of early literacy in children who are two language learners. Included are summaries of specific research studies that address each of the identified issues. In particular, the review addresses these concepts: (1) assessment for two language children, which requires a positive schema around how two languages interact in young children in the United States, and assessment of how concepts known in the first language relate to concepts being learned in the second language; (2) further research to explore how the two languages interact in literacy development and student experience; and (3) study of the differences and similarities in emergent reading and writing behaviors of Spanish speaking children. The paper also discusses implications of these concepts for literacy instruction for Spanish/English emerging bilinguals. (Contains 9 figures and 36 references.) (SLD) |
