Teaching and Learning for Students with Interrupted Formal Education & Refugee Backgrounds

 

As a follow up to the March 20 webinar Meeting the Needs of Students with Interrupted Formal Education & Refugee Backgrounds, our next webinar will focus on classroom practices and strategies which support refugee students and students with interupted formal education (SIFE), aged 13-16. Dr. Myrna Ann Adkins, President and CEO of the Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning, will focus on background pedagogical knowledge that equips teachers to work effectively with this population of students, including ways to increase sensitivity to the specific backgrounds of diverse students, as well as looking at behavioral and other signs which might indicate a history of trauma survivorship. Dr. Andrea DeCapua, Educational Consultant and Adjunct Assistant Professor at New York University, will continue the discussion by examining different ways of learning and assumptions about teaching and learning. This will be followed by considering how to best transition students with limited or interrupted formal education to U.S. educational settings and by providing examples of successful strategies and classroom practices.  Both presenters will provide resources for further learning and exploration.
